About Frank Sartor
Frank Sartor is the son of immigrant parents from
northern Italy who arrived in Australia soon after World War II with
their four children. They settled in rural NSW where they had another
four children, Franceso (Frank) being the first. Most of Frank’s
childhood was spent on a farm in Yenda, near Griffith.
Frank went on to win a scholarship and attended Sydney
University and the University of New South Wales, completing degrees in
Chemical Engineering and Commerce (Honours). He then worked for Colgate
Palmolive and an oil company.

Councillor in 1984 and then Lord Mayor of Sydney in September 1991. On
the 26 September 2000 he became the longest-serving Mayor in the
Council’s history.
During his time as Lord Mayor, central Sydney underwent
some of the most dramatic changes in its 210 year history. The Living

sector investment. A Safe City strategy also resulted in a dramatic
decrease in city crime. He also played a key role in the Sydney 2000
Olympic Games and was vice-president of the Sydney Organising Committee.
He was awarded the Order of Australia in 2001.
In the March 2003 State Election Frank Sartor was
elected as the State Member for Rockdale, and was later chosen to be a
part of the Premier’s Cabinet.
As the former Minister for Energy and Utilities , Frank
Sartor set up the Water and Energy Saving Fund, the first of its kind in
Australia, providing incentives for people to use water and energy more
wisely. In addition, he helped Sydneysiders to save 131 billion litres
of water in just under two years.
As Minister for Assisting the Minister for Health
(Cancer) Frank Sartor also established the Cancer Institute NSW, which
aims to reduce the incidence of cancer in NSW and to increase the
survival rate for people diagnosed with cancer with its support and
commissioning of research. It has been allocated $205 million dollars
for its program in the first four years.
